Think everything goes downhill after 40? Think again!

Some people are just plain inspirational, and Frances Burton is no exception. While many decide to give up in their 40's, not only did Frances not give up, she made the commitment to quit yo-yo'ing with her weight and get into the BEST shape of her life. Check out how she finally achieved the body of her dreams and at the young age of 46 stepped on stage for the first time. Here's my interview with this inspiring woman.

Competition Weight: 97 lbs.

Recent Win: 3rd Place at the South Texas Classic

--What inspired you to get into shape?

I was just tired of the constant yo-yo with my weight. I had gained 50 pounds after the birth of my daughter and saw my metabolism slow as I got older.


--How long did it take you to get stage ready?

Really about 9 months. I wanted to compete sooner than that but as I got closer I decided to hold off until I was really ready. It was a bit of a disappointment but I loved the changes I was seeing so I kept pushing.

What's interesting about my transformation is that even though the outside improvement was obvious, it was the improvement on the inside that was so amazing. The sense of empowerment that came with taking control of my body, the confidence that comes with that, spilled over into all other areas of my life. Even the way I carried myself improved. I mean, I used to slouch all the time and now stand tall. It's really a reflection of the way I feel.


--What is the one most important part of living a healthy lifestyle?

Oh my goodness it's really hard to boil it down to one. But I guess if I had to I would say the nutrition. You know I used to think I ate "right" before I really got serious with my journey. Boy was I wrong! I either wasn't eating enough or not eating the right foods at the right times. I used to be a horrible scale watcher, thinking the less I ate the more the number on the scale should drop. It took a while for me to turn that way of thinking around. Now I never look at the scale.

All of my meals are prepared ahead of time now. I try to do 3 days at a time.

I eat every couple of hours and have gotten rid of the bad eating habits from before. I had a really bad "salty tooth", and would eat what felt good for the moment. Now I eat what is good for life.


--Share a day of eating.

5 meals a day.

1st meal - egg whites with an Ezekiel muffin

Next 4 meals - generally a lean protein, veggies, and a sweet potato or brown rice

Sometimes it gets a little mundane but the long term results of eating clean are so much more satisfying than the short term pleasure of giving into to cravings.


--What is your advice for someone who wants to compete in bikini or figure, or just get into the best shape of their life?

Never feel like it's too late and surround yourself with supportive people. As a a single mom with 2 daughters that works full time, if I can do it, anyone can!

Also, set a goal such as a particular competition and keep it in front of you all the time as a constant reminder. I purchased my suit early, and hung it where I had to look at in first thing in the morning and last thing at night.
