Are We Addicted to Empty Calorie Foods?

A shift in perspective about food has taken place in the United States over the past couple of decades that I find not only concerning, but disturbing. And this shift is absolutely contributing to the obesity epidemic in our nation, destroying our health and well being.

Inevitably, at least a few times a week, I will hear someone say to me one of the following:

"Kristin I couldn't do what you do. I love food too much"

"I hate 'diets'. I need variety."

"When you get to 'eat' again..."

The funny thing is, now that I've been clean eating and involved in fitness for the better part of 30 years, I have this sort of unique perspective where I have seen a change in what we consider to be "food" and our perception of "variety" in our diets.

You see, 15 or 20 years ago I never heard these statements.

I was eating pretty much the same way I do now.

I bought the same foods at the grocery store.

Yet I heard things like:

"Wow that's a LOT of food! How in the world do you eat all that?"

"What a RICH diet!"


"Mmmmmmmmmnnnnn that looks so good."

So what changed?

And why?

I had the unique privilege and honor of being able to speak at the TEDxUIdaho event recently where I addressed these very questions.
